The Memphis breakdown

Since the Final Four features three of the best programs of all time, BB is going to give you his historical breakdown of each team ... and, well, Memphis might not be up there with UCLA, Kansas and UNC, but the Tigers still have a solid history.

All-time staring five:

Penny Hardaway … re-invented the point guard position with 22.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 6.4 assists a game his junior season before bolting to the NBA.

Derrick Rose … he might only stick around for a year, but the explosive point guard was the missing piece for head coach John Calipari.

Larry Kenon … averaged 20.1 points and 16.7 rebounds in 1972-73 as the Tigers advanced to the NCAA title game, losing to UCLA.

Larry Finch … another player on that 1973 team, Finch averaged 26.8 points a game during the tournament run and later coached the Tigers.

Keith Lee … a four-time All-American center who averaged 19.7 points to lead the Tigers to a then-school record 31 wins and the 1985 Final Four.

Best team:

The current Tigers have a chance to claim this spot with two more victories, but right now, the title goes to that 1973 team that went all the way to the final – the game that saw UCLA big man Bill Walton go a near-perfect 22 of 23 from the field.
